Girls Varsity: Back to Back LEAGUE CHAMPIONS!
The Lady Hunters zoomed their way to victory on May 2 to retain the Valley Mission League title. Anchored by the city champion cross country team and strong performances in the field events, CPHS skirted by a powerful San Fernando team by a mere five points. Senior Angelina Valladares captured gold in the 800m and 1600m races. Junior Angelina Lopez struck gold in the 3200m. Our 4 x 400 relay team (Jimena Bolanos, Angelina Lopez, Angelina Valladares, Ana Jasso) stomped the competition with a 4:19. The 4 x 800 (Ana Jasso, Angelina Valladares, Angelina Lopez, Karina Perez) won handily and are a favorite to represent CPHS at the CIF State Track Meet in Fresno on May 24/25.
Many little dominoes had to fall in all the right places. Sophomore Ana Jasso flew to a personal best 5'-0" and a gold medal in the high jump. Senior Bobbi Dickerson Brockenbro bested her way to a silver in both the long jump and triple jump. Senior Anna Nguyen, who just learned the hurdles this year, stole a fourth place medal in the 300m intermediate hurdles. Other seemingly minor contributions by other CP athletes all added up to a league championship.
Boys Varsity Falls Short of League Title; Take Second
At the final home track meet of the year, number one sprinter, sophomore Dallas Lakey suffered a hamstring strain, keeping him from competing at the Valley Mission League Finals. The backbone of the 4 x 100 and the 4 x 400 relays, he was ranked top three in the 400m and number one in the 300m intermediate hurdles. Those lost points would have surely made a difference. Kennedy captured the league championship by a mere 25 points. Junior Alexis Gonzalez Took home the gold in the 1600m and the bronze in the 3200m. Jacob Imwiko bounced his way to a golden trifecta, winning the high jump, long jump and triple jump (He is currently ranked number one in the city for the triple jump). When asked "what the heck are you feeding that kid?" Coach Villalobos replied, "Sautéed grasshoppers with a hint of garlic."
Frosh-Soph Girls Regain Title; LEAGUE CHAMPIONS!
The frosh-Soph girls last won the league title in 2022. In a close battle with Van Nuys, the girls were able to construct a six-point victory for the title. Led by a strong distance performance, Sophomores Peyten Hernandez and Abrielle Arcilla took Gold and Silver Respectively in the 800m. Hernandez aso demolished the field with a 6:02, 1600m run. Sophomore Vanessa Perez outran her opponents to seize a gold medal. Smooth handoffs cruised the 4 x 100 team (Emily Arechiga-9, Lehar Soni-9, Kimberly Chavez-9, Alyssa Morris-9) to a first place. Peyten Hernandez also jumped to a personal best in the long jump, winning the event by one quarter of an inch.
Frosh-Soph Boys take fourth at VML Finals
Not for lack of effort, but lack of numbers, a roster-light boys frosh-soph team held their own in the Valley Mission League Championships. Sophomore Joshua Trujillo Highlighted the track meet with a stellar performance by winning the Golden distance trifecta; 800m, 1600m, 3200m. Jayshawn Manary sailed to gold in the log jump with a 17'3.5", winning by a mere 3.5 inches.
